How Does Toothpaste Work?
Toothpaste. It’s something we use everyday. Some of us even use it after every meal to help keep our teeth looking their best to help keep our breath fresh and clean. When you visit a Brooklyn cosmetic dentist at our practice, we use toothpaste here as well to polish and improve the appearance of your smile.
But here’s a questions for you: do you have any idea how toothpaste works? Take a second to think it over. Toothpaste really is something we take for granted. It might be worthwhile as we’re discussing all these other dental health issues to go over the basics of how toothpastes work.
In the most basic terms, toothpaste helps with the cleaning of teeth by providing a gentle abrasive that assists in the removal of plaque. When brushed around with a toothbrush, little bits of plaque are freed from the surface of the teeth. Generally, toothpastes will contain the following ingredients: abrasives, substances to prevent bacterial growth, detergents, and some sort of flavoring. Coloring agents are not unusual either.
In some cases, the toothpaste will have special substances that will be applied to the tooth, such as fluoride or tooth whitening solutions of some kind. These can be helpful for promoting improved dental health, though it should be noted that a professional tooth whitening treatment is more effective than a tooth whitening toothpaste. Brooklyn teeth whitening at our office can lighten smiles much more drastically.
Selecting the right toothpaste can pose some challenges. It’s not always clear which toothpaste is going to be the best for you and your needs. Some trial and error may be required. Generally, you’ll want to pick a toothpaste that leaves your mouth feeling clean and feeling fresh. You’ll also want to pick a toothpaste with a flavor that you don’t mind.
There are other things to consider when it comes to dental care and dental hygiene, so be sure to visit our dental office to discuss these matters in greater detail. We look forward to meeting with you.
